In any case, I just said that I'm for <I>stricter</I> gun control including background checks and permits. Perhaps background checks are always required, but permits are not. Since 1993, it has been federal law that any firearms transaction going through a federally-licensed dealer must have a background check completed for the buyer. This is just federal law, mind you. Many states have additional hoops to jump through for people who want to legally purchase a firearm.
